…and say hello to the GE Holographic disc, which can store up to 500GB of data!
Scientists at GE Laboratories have achieved this extreme capacity by writing data under the surface of the disc, as opposed to present-day discs which can be written at the top layer only.

1.) HD-DVD is dead.
2.) We don't need another optical disk storage medium.
3.) Blu-ray is slowly inching into success with the support of the different companies that abandoned HD-DVD(except Microsoft) and the Playstation 3.
4.) This new technology would be DAMN expensive.
5.) Holographic disc players would be MUCH more expensive.
6.) Unless this new format presents something new/innovative, it likely won't succeed.
1.) HD-DVD is out of the market grid, but not necessarily dead. But of course, its utilization is already on a poor level so it's likely to become obsolete in the near future.
2.) WE, as end-consumers, don't. But larger ends such as big corporations or even server clusters would highly benefit from that… think of storing 500GB on a single DVD-sized disc. GE is even planning to take it to a terabyte per disc.
3.) There's no point in arguing with you in that point, Blu-ray IS gaining a big name for itself and is being very much welcomed by the consumers population with wide arms.
4.) Not necessarily, no. Over the time, its price would slowly depreciate, like Blu-ray. And of course, it wouldn't be released THAT soon, so there's no need to rant about that YET. But undoubtedly, GE is trying to make the materials used in this disc as economical as possible. Haven't you heard what they said on the video?
5.) Of course. But read point 4.
6.) It's main purpose is for backing up large quantities of data. In the entertainment business, many corporate media giants would largely benefit from this. Think of FOX Home releasing a holographic disc with a collection of every single Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt movie. Of course, GE has not presented its conceptual innovations as of now, but later on I wouldn't be surprised if they demo l337 abilities.
Thanks for the comment. I highly appreciate it.
Very informative text. I’ve found your site via Google and I’m really glad about the information you provide in your articles. Btw your blogs layout is really broken on the Kmelon browser. Would be really great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the great work!
