Chrome vs Firefox

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are currently the big names on geeks’ desktops. Firefox is known to be a reliable and secure (and fast) browser for all occasions since its release, while the startup Chrome has been marked fast, lightweight, and stable by almost all its users.

While Chrome may be a new browser, its motto of ‘one box for all‘ lives up to its name — and is cutting deeper into Mozilla’s flesh.

Since its release in mid-2008, Google Chrome has attracted many users (most of which are techies and activists) because of Google’s large-scale marketing and the word of mouth about its powerful simplicity. Fast, easy on resources, and feature-packed. While not sophisticated and full of whimsy, Chrome delivers lightning fast browsing speed and quick interface access. Plus, the software architects made sure that Chrome is easy on web real estate, so they made the main window’s design simple and minimal: small and easy icons for basic functions, and dropdown menus for added features and quick access to other tools.

Performance Comparison

Firefox may be ‘The Browser That Has It All‘, but Chrome defeats it in terms of speed (along with all other browsers), based on the results of SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark test posted by kourge. A quick Google search shows that many users did the same test, and proved that Chrome is indeed faster with its V8 JavaScript engine

In terms of memory and resource usage, Google Chrome is faster than both IE 7 and Firefox 3, eating only about two-thirds of IE7’s regular consumption. Ryan Sloan’s experience on Google Chrome clearly shows that Chrome is less hoggier than Firefox.

What next? We surely can’t miss out the point that Firefox (fully customized with plugins) takes almost a minute to load (on an Intel Pentium IV 2.8GHz with 512MB RAM), while Chrome, in great contast, takes only a split second to load. Fat Knowledge’s review on Chrome widely agrees. By the way, Firefox would take over a minute to load on a cold start; Chrome would take a second still. Anyway, Firefox peeps can use Firefox Preloader to improve this, but the point is that Chrome loads faster on all accounts.

Privacy

Chrome delivers the most powerful privacy features I’ve ever laid my hands on. Yes, Firefox’s ‘Clear Private Data‘ button would enforce the privacy line, but Chrome’s Incognito mode takes the word ‘private’ to a whole new level. However, adding the Stealthier plugin on Firefox would take the competition neck-to-neck.

Conclusion

Since Chrome is still a baby browser (still in the beta phase at that), it can’t yet deliver the same feel Firefox has given through the years; such as its customizability and flexibility. Yet, even at its early stage, Chrome has impressed vaticans and professional technologists with its power and build. Take it out of beta and put extensibility to it, Chrome would surely topple Firefox and dominate the browser wars.
